CTS action is the result of a strong commitment to:

  • Advanced technology research and technology transfer to industry (national and European), reflecting a strong application and product oriented research and development (R&D);
  • Deeply involvement in advanced education and training, e.g., through the participation in a multidisciplinary PhD program (PDEEC at FCTUNL).

In the period 2008-2012, CTS was involved in more than 118 financed projects both, national (42), and international (44), complemented by projects with industry (14) and external services (18). This is demonstrated by the successful completion of the projects and by the achievement of 16 patents.

Publications include 263 peer-reviewed papers in Journals and 624 at international conferences (in the 5-year period 2008-2012), and more than 22 scientific books and 100 book chapters.

Best paper awards and other forms of recognition of the work done have been received:

  • 2009, Doctor Honoris Causa (Prof. L. Camarinha)
  • 2009 IBM Prize (Dr. M. Beko)
  • 2012 "IEEE Int. Conf. on Intelligent Systems", Best Paper Award (Dr. R. Gonçalves)
  • 2012 IEEE CASS Young Author Award (given to PhD student M. Figueiredo). This award honors an especially meritorious paper published in any of the Society's Transactions whose author at the date of submission is less than 30 years of age
  • 2013 FCT Development Grant (Dra. Rita Ribeiro). This was the only grant given by FCT, in the broad area of electrical engineering and computer science (EECS)
  • 2014 Winners of the EDP "Internet-of-Things" Challenge (prof. João Martins)

A major achievement demonstrating strong collaboration within CTS was the creation, organization, and participation in the Doctoral Conference on Computing, Electrical and Industrial Systems (DoCEIS), which has reached its 5th edition with a growing national and international participation (over 112 participants in DoCEIS'2013) and we are currently expecting a higher number attending DoCEIS'2014 (http://sites.uninova.pt/doceis).
