Research Line A
Telecommunications & Signal Processing
Structure of the Research Group
The A2 group includes 5 PhD integrated researchers, plus 9 PhD researchers, 6 PhD students and deals with a variable number of MSc students.

These elements have competences in 4 main areas: Digital Signal Processing, Fractional Signal Processing, Biomedical Signal Processing, Telecommunications Signal conditioning and enhancement.

The multidisciplinary interests of the group members makes possible the development of the key blocks of modern signal processing.

Digital Signal Processing is done by several elements of the group depending on the type of problem at hand. Fractional Signal Processing is done mainly by three researchers (integrated researcher Manuel Duarte Ortigueira, Fernado J. V. Coito and Juan J. Trujillo). Biomedical Signal Processing and healt related signal processing is done mainly by the three integrated researchers Arnaldo Manuel Guimarães Batista, Adelino Rocha Ferreira da Silva and Raul Eduardo Capela Tello Rato. Other group researchers are also active in this area, namely Alberto Joao Rodrigues Leal and Reis * * * . The integrated researcher Marko Beko main activity is related to Telecommunications Signal conditioning and enhancement, as well as other researchers activities, namely Paulo Miguel de Araújo Borges Montezuma de Carvalho, Pedro Alexandre da Costa Amaral, Rui Miguel Henriques Dias Morgado Dinis, Paulo da Costa Luis da Fonseca Pinto and Luis Filipe Lourenço Bernardo.

The organizational structure is based on three levels, the integrated reserachers level, the general researchers level and the PhD students level, currently with six PhD students. This third level is very dynamic, as students naturally tend to leave the group after finishing their theses. We aim to progressively increase the number of PhD students. Considering the reference period of 2015-2020, it is reasonable to consider a supervision capacity to accommodate between 6 and 15 PhD students in the group without compromising the needed quality of supervision. However, we are paying attention to the current economic conditions of the country that do limit the national preference for research activities. Accordingly we are making an effort to attract foreign students.
